WHAT IS PBIS?

  • Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, three-tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. It is a system for teaching and supporting positive behaviors and meeting the needs of ALL students.

PBIS is based on the idea that when students are taught clearly defined behavioral expectations and provided with predictable responses to their behavior, both positive and corrective, 80-85% of students will meet these expectations. The 15-20% of the students not responding to universal interventions will receive additional support through group and individual interventions.

PBIS is a school-wide approach to discipline focuses on building a safe and positive environment in which all students can learn.

  • The core values of PBIS is C.A.R.E. (Careful, Accountable, Respectful, and Enthusiastic).  Each of these principles reflect the belief that each person deserves and needs a positive, concerned, accepting educational community that values diversity and provides a comprehensive system of individual supports from birth to adulthood.
