Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a comprehensive framework that promotes academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success for all students within a school or educational setting. It is an evidence-based approach designed to provide targeted support and intervention to students at various levels of need, ensuring that they receive the necessary assistance to thrive and reach their full potential.
A MTSS model typically consists of three tiers or levels of support:
- Tier 1: Universal Supports - This tier includes high-quality instruction and supports that are provided to all students within the general education setting. It focuses on implementing evidence-based practices and strategies to promote positive learning environments, prevent academic and behavioral difficulties, and meet the diverse needs of students. All students are screened three time a year (Fall, Winter, and Spring) using the Easy CBM Screener in the areas of Math and Reading. Stanford 10 (Standardized Testing): This test is given to KG-8th grade students once a year in the spring. Students complete these paper/pencil assessments individually and scores are reported back to families in the months following the tests. The data (Stanford and Easy CBM) is used to determine instruction and groupings for students to best receive services.
- Tier 2 (Remedial Services Through AIU3): Targeted Supports - Students who require additional support beyond what is provided in Tier 1 are identified and offered targeted interventions in Tier 2. These interventions are more specific and intensive, addressing the identified areas of need. Examples include small group instruction, skill-building programs, and personalized interventions. This program is funded through Title I and Act 89. We contract with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit AIU3 to provide these services to our students. A teacher through AIU3 is assigned to our building 2 days a week.
- Tier 3: Intensive Supports - Students who continue to struggle despite receiving Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions are provided with intensive, individualized supports in Tier 3. This tier involves a more intensive level of intervention, such as one-on-one instruction, specialized interventions, and ongoing progress monitoring. The goal is to address the unique needs of these students and provide the necessary support to help them succeed.
MTSS promotes a holistic approach to education, recognizing that students' academic success is interconnected with their social-emotional well-being. By providing a comprehensive system of supports, MTSS aims to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment where all students can thrive.
